The salon

About the salon

A San Francisco hair salon since day one.

Reception and lounge

Our story

Patrick Evan opened the salon with a simple belief: great hair comes from real expertise and an honest conversation. His own specialty, Japanese hair straightening, asks for precision, patience and a deep understanding of how hair behaves. That standard shapes everything we do.

Instead of teaching one look to every chair, we brought together a community of specialists. Colorists, cutters, and extension and smoothing experts each bring their own craft, so you’re matched with the person whose work fits what you want.

Our loft-inspired space on levels 4–6 of 55 Grant Avenue, just off Union Square, is bright and unhurried. It’s a place to slow down, talk things through and leave feeling looked after.

Every appointment starts with a consultation. We ask what you love about your hair, how you wear it day to day and how much time you want to spend on it. Then we build a cut, color or treatment that works with your hair rather than against it.

Learning never stops here. Education and collaboration are part of salon life: stylists share techniques, train together and keep their skills current. It’s a big reason SF Weekly voted us best hair salon in San Francisco.

Whether you come for a fresh cut, a lasting transformation or simply a little time for yourself, our goal is the same. We want you to leave with hair that feels like you.

Hair extensions · Union Square

Hair extensions in San Francisco.

More length and fullness, blended to your own hair. We specialize in wefts, tape-ins and K-tips — all available in balayage color — matched to your hair at your consultation.

Methods

Three ways to add length.

Wefts

Rows of hair sewn onto a secure bead or braid base, with no glue, tape or heat on your hair. Wefts add the most volume in the fewest rows and lie flat against the head. We use BELLAMI Professional wefts.

Maximum volumeNo glue or heatMove-ups every 4–9 weeks

Tape-ins

100% remy human hair on thin tape tabs, sandwiched around small sections of your own hair. Quick to apply and seamless, they last 8–10 weeks and can be re-taped and reused up to three times.

Quick to applyLies flatReusable up to 3×

K-tips

Individual strands bonded to your hair with a small keratin tip, placed one by one. Because each bond is tiny, K-tips move freely and suit fine hair or anyone who wears their hair up. They typically last 3–4 months.

Strand by strandGreat for fine hairWear it up

Balayage extensions: every method is available pre-colored with a soft, blended root that fades into lighter ends, so the hair sits naturally in lived-in, dimensional color.

Aftercare

Caring for your extensions.

Wash with lukewarm water and sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner — our Keune, R+Co and Oribe care lines work well. Section between the rows and shampoo twice.

Rinse upright, not upside down, and wash no more than twice a week.

Never comb through wet extensions, and never sleep on them wet. Air-dry to about 80%, then blow-dry on low.

Use hot tools on dry hair only, always with a heat protectant. Oil the ends daily and keep styling products away from the bonds, tabs and tracks.

Skip high or tight ponytails and pins or clips along the attachment line. Brush gently, without pulling at the root.

Your consultation

It starts with a conversation.

Every extension service begins with a consultation. We look at your hair, talk through the length, volume and color you want, and recommend the method that suits your hair and routine.

You’ll leave with a personalized quote and a maintenance plan, so you know what to expect before anything is applied.

Extension specialists

Colorist · keratin & extension specialistEmma Breese

Trained at Paul Mitchell and with Toni & Guy in London, Emma pairs her color work with extensions, so the blend between your hair and the added length is seamless. Her priority is keeping your own hair healthy through every install and move-up.

With a cutting style rooted in Vidal Sassoon structure and a love of dimensional, hand-painted color, Olivia shapes and blends extensions so they move like your own hair — from soft, lived-in length to bolder looks.

Extension questions

Ask us anything.

Will extensions damage my hair?

Applied and maintained properly, they shouldn’t. Wefts and tape-ins put no heat on your hair, K-tip bonds are small and removed with a gentle solution, and regular maintenance keeps the tension even.

How long does an install take?

Usually 1.5–3 hours for wefts or tape-ins. K-tips take longer because each strand is placed by hand.

Which method is right for me?

We decide together at your consultation. Wefts give the most volume, tape-ins are the quickest and most budget-friendly, and K-tips suit fine hair and updos.

Is it real hair?

Yes. We use 100% remy human hair, with the cuticle intact and every strand running the same direction to prevent matting and tangling.

How long do they last?

Wefts are moved up every 4–9 weeks and the hair can be reused for 6–12 months. Tape-ins last 8–10 weeks before they’re re-taped and reapplied. K-tips typically last 3–4 months.

Can you match my color?

Yes. We blend shades to match your hair, and balayage extensions come with a soft root built in for dimensional color.

Can I use hot tools?

Yes — blow-dry, curl and flat-iron as usual. Keep direct heat off the tabs or tracks, and use a heat protectant to extend the life of the hair.

What products should I use?

Sulfate-free shampoo to keep the color from fading. Keep conditioner, oils and alcohol-based products away from the scalp and attachment points.

Can I color my roots with extensions in?

Yes, but have it done by your stylist so the tabs or tracks stay secure.

How are extensions priced?

Pricing depends on the method, length, color and amount of hair, so we quote at your consultation. Reapplication is priced at a flat rate.

Thinking about extensions? Start with a consultation.

Your educators
Sara Rosenthal, mentor and color instructor at Patrick Evan Salon Academy, San Francisco
Mentor & color instructor Sara Rosenthal

Sara has been drawn to salons since she was a child, and today she leads color education at our Academy. She mentors each student through the full color appointment — reading your starting shade and history at the consultation, planning the formula, and checking the work at every stage before you leave the chair.

Her background spans classic and current technique. She has a deep interest in hairstyles of the 1930s and ’40s and has worked with the Art Deco Society of San Francisco, and she is especially fond of balayage for the control it gives the colorist and the longer-lasting result it gives the client. She continues her own training through classes and shows so the curriculum reflects what is happening in the industry now.

Tess Maurer, cutting instructor at Patrick Evan Salon Academy, San Francisco
Cutting instructor Tess Maurer

Tess has more than ten years of experience behind the chair and trained with Vidal Sassoon. Her interest in hair started early — at three, she cut her own — and she has specialized in both cutting and color ever since, building complete looks from start to finish.

As Cutting Director at Patrick Evan Salon, she runs the haircut portion of our Academy. Sharing what she knows is central to how she works: she sets the cut each class is learning, demonstrates the technique, and stays with every model appointment to guide the student and make sure the finished shape is right for you.

Born behind the straightening chair.

A career in Japanese hair straightening taught Patrick Evan exactly what an iron has to do, and how rarely one does it well. He had yet to find a flat iron he was truly satisfied with for his discerning clients.

So rather than settle, he went looking for something more stable and more precise. He found it in E3 technology, a heating system that exceeded even his own expectations, and built the Evan Professional Flat Iron around it.

Smarter by design.

Six details that make every pass smoother, safer and easier.

Hibernation mode

A built-in sensor prevents overheating, and the iron drops to a very low heat after a period of non-use. Safer, and better on energy.

Vibration mode

A gentle pulse oscillates the plates so hair keeps gliding through, for superior shine and an exceptionally smooth finish.

Tilt & cushion plates

Balanced plate pressure gives even heat transfer and reduces wrist fatigue.

Rounded casing

The rounded outer shape creates curls and waves as easily as sleek, straight styles.

Keratin & smoothing · Union Square

Keratin treatments in San Francisco.

Smoother. Softer. More manageable. Still your hair.

Every keratin and smoothing treatment we do is built around one thing: the result you want from your own hair.

What it is

Smoother hair, for a season.

A professional smoothing service that reduces frizz, softens texture and adds shine. Depending on the formula and your hair, it can also relax some wave or curl.

Unlike Japanese straightening, keratin fades gradually over weeks and months, and your natural texture returns.

Less frizzHumidity resistanceMore shineFaster blow-dryA softer wave or curl
Results

Smoothing that works with your texture.

Applied section by section, processed, then dried and heat-finished. Where your hair lands depends on your texture and the system we choose together.

Noticeably less frizz.

Hair that feels calmer and smoother, and is much easier to manage day to day.

A softer, more relaxed curl.

Noticeably looser texture that’s quicker to blow-dry and finish.

Smoother, and easier to style straight.

For clients who want a more polished finish with less effort.

Results vary from person to person. We also offer a shorter express service for lighter, shorter-term frizz control. Ask at your consultation.

The systems we use

Every head of hair responds differently to straightening. Rather than relying on a single product line, we work with three trusted Japanese systems, each with its own strengths and formula options. That wider range lets us tailor every treatment to your texture, condition and chemical history, so you get the best possible result for your hair.

YUKO Japanese Hair Straightening

YUKO is one of the original Japanese thermal reconditioning systems, known for creating exceptionally smooth, straight, glossy hair while allowing the formula to be selected according to the hair’s condition and chemical history. Patrick received advanced YUKO training at the YUKO flagship in Tokyo as well as in Beverly Hills, and both Patrick and Clara have extensive hands-on experience working with the YUKO system.

Liscio by Milbon

Liscio is a professional Japanese straightening system from Milbon with multiple formula strengths designed for different hair textures, resistance levels, and degrees of chemical processing. Patrick is trained and certified in the Liscio system and has worked with the line for years, allowing him to customize the process rather than relying on a one-formula-fits-all approach.

iStraight

iStraight is a versatile Japanese hair straightening system offering Max, Normal, and Mild formulas for everything from strong, resistant virgin hair to color-treated, highlighted, and more sensitized hair. Patrick and Clara have years of experience using iStraight and selecting the appropriate strength based on each client’s texture, previous chemical services, and overall hair condition.
